Peillon, 15 kms from Nice has managed to preserve its medieval appearance, very rustic, abrupt, into its greenery background, we will see sloping paved staircases weaving among the flowered houses.

We can also find several vaulted passages. Most of the villages first appeared in the XIIth and XIIIth century. When the countrymen that lived in the inshore villages, ran away into the inside height lands where they could stay safe far from the pirates and from the armies of thieves. This charming perched village looks like a hat on the top of the verdant hill which combines the appearance of the medieval architecture with an astonishing view overlooking the blue coastline.

Eze is a stunning-hilltop-village  like an eagle’s nest at the summit of an imposing and splendid cliff, Eze extends seaside to Cap Roux at the forefront of Cabuel. Èze is a jewel, it is like no other hilltop village with small stone streets vaulted passages, beautifully restored stone houses, shady squares and refreshing old fountains.  While you are in this village, overlooking the sea, you can get a splendid scene.

Between the Mediterranean Sea and Italy, the Royal Valley sprawls from 180 to around 3000m height. It is close to the giant mythical Valley of Wonders (vallée des Merveilles), in the Mercantour Park which still stands intact includes the landscapes of streams and lakes, emerald gradation basins and a rich and various wild-life.

The entire village of Gorbio is embellished with giant succulents and Mediterranean flowers which keeps these old stones full of history and gives an elegant touch. Several cultural and festive animations are organized (mainly during the summer) as well as musical evenings. The cherry festival is held in June, painting exhibitions are held as well as the well-known slug procession… simple snail shells emptied and embellished with a flame…!

It has been an Episcopal town since the Fifth century, Sospel was for a long a very important stage along the royal road from Nice to Turin, known as well as the salt mule, where the Bévéra was crossed by a toll bridge. It was built during the XIIIth century, the “Old Bridge” still remains. The landscapes surrounding Sospel are splendid. Sospel is a path of crossroads which is good for hikers and is before the famous Valley of Wonders and Mercantour National Park.  Known as «The Olive tree region » with an important hand-crafted activity, Breil sur Roya is a lively village, offering several celebrations such as the famous « a Staccada » (every 4 years) and an historical reconstitution that commemorates the abolition of the “right of the first night”. Saorge is a perched village hanging over the Mercantour, it is an astonishing and unique village because of its geographic position and its general appearance hanging on the slope of the mountain. The Saorge fortified square, is renowned as impregnable and was nicknamed « The Roya bolt ». It was built directly on the rock, the village emits, when we go inside, an incredible impression of safety and inner self.

Ste Agnès is the highest medieval village in Europe (780m ), embellished with huge plants and  Mediterranean flowers.

Menton has up to 316 days of sunshine every year. The historic heart of the city beats behind its ochre facades, with its subdue louvered shutter, the Italian way, preserving privacy into the houses and protecting them from the sunlight rays. We go through history as we watch the glazed tiles bell towers. Baroque art has created a remarkable ensemble: The Saint-Michel Basilica paves and some steps further we get to the chapel of white penitents. The church is the symbol of the Russian presence in Menton. At the end of the last century, the Russian colony was quite important in the Côte d’Azur. Thus, in 1880, the great duchess Anastasia, (a granddaughter of Tsar Nicolas I and aunt of Tsar Nicolas II), decided to fund a Russian community named « Russian Orthodox association of Sainte-Anastasia ». In order to allow the young people to come and stay in Menton in one of the houses. There’s a beautiful legend which explains the origin of the town and its symbol, The lemon: Eve, rejected from paradise with Adam, takes a golden fruit from the divine angel and asks her to throw the fruit which was buried in the gulf, now plenty of lemon-trees grow with the softness of the climate, Menton was born in this corner of paradise…

Departure towards Monte Carlo.

Monte Carlo was built on a rocky spur overlooking the sea. Since ancient times, the rock of Monaco and its natural port has served as a refuge to primitive populations then to sailors coming from the Orient. During VIth century BC, a ligure tribe lived in the region giving the name of Monaco to the Principality. For seven centuries, The Grimaldi family have presided over the outcomes of the Principality of Monaco. This exceptional dynastic longevity illustrates the national unity between the prince and the people. Monaco is a modern country, with 125 different nationalities living in the Principality.

Departure towards Ezethe perched village.

Èze is like a jewel, it doesn’t look as the other perched villages with its small back alleys made of stone and its vaulted passages, its stone houses  superbly restored , its  shady palettes (small squares) ,its ancient, refreshing  fountains , this village, overhanging the sea is just beautiful… splendid !
